Extending a $10,000 Helping Hand to Western Queensland Flood Victims
QLD Flood Assistance
When disaster strikes, it’s often the quiet acts of kindness that make the biggest difference and the people of the bush come together when it is needed most.
In response to the devastating floods in Western Queensland, the Rotary Club of Goondiwindi has donated $10,000 to support those affected.
The donation, made possible through annual fundraising efforts, was split between two key channels – $5000 provided through the Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) to support broader disaster relief efforts, while a further $5000 was donated directly to the Thargomindah community to assist families on the ground.
Members of the Rotary Club – and the wider Goondiwindi community – have friends and family directly impacted by the floods, and the people of Goondiwindi understand firsthand the urgency of clean-up efforts, where cash assistance is crucial to getting essential supplies and support to those who need it most.
As an agricultural region ourselves, the Goondiwindi community know too well the lasting toll that floods can have on rural communities and productivity.
Club President David Turner said the donation reflected the spirit of Rotary’s motto, Service Above Self.
“Our club is always grateful for the ongoing support of the Goondiwindi community through initiatives such as our annual Christmas Raffle, donations for the Bozo Bus, and support at events like Gourmet in Gundy, just to name a few, and it is thanks to that generosity that we are able to provide tangible assistance at times of hardship,” Mr Turner said.
The Rotary Club of Goondiwindi prides itself on investing locally, regionally, and internationally in projects that build resilience and support those in need.
