Peace Pole planted at Botanic Gardens
Rotary Club of Goondiwindi Plants Peace Pole at Botanical Gardens
On Sunday, 23rd February, the Rotary Club of Goondiwindi proudly planted a Peace Pole at the Goondiwindi Botanical Gardens. As a serene public space, the Botanic Gardens provide the perfect location for a Peace Pole. The chosen site features an elevated vantage point where the beauty of the gardens unfolds, inviting reflection and a sense of peace.
The Rotary Club of Goondiwindi extends its gratitude to the Goondiwindi Botanic Gardens for their support with the installation of the Peace Pole.
What is a Peace Pole?
A Peace Pole is a monument that stands in silent vigil for peace, acting as a reminder for all to think, reflect and act in the spirit of peace. Peace Poles are intended to inspire unity among people of all cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds.
Each Peace Pole is inscribed with the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” and include translations in six additional languages. This affirmation of peace aligns with Rotary’s mission of fostering a culture of peace worldwide.
First introduced in 1955 in the aftermath of World War II, the Peace Pole movement has since seen more than 250,000 poles erected in approximately 200 countries, including around 400 Rotary Peace Poles in Australia, symbolising a shared hope for a more peaceful world.
The timing of the Peace Pole’s installation was particularly meaningful, coinciding with Rotary World Understanding and Peace Day as well as the 120th anniversary of Rotary International, a fitting tribute to Rotary’s enduring commitment to global peace and community service.
